At UWM, we’ve found that the act of inclusion doesn’t always have to be a grand gesture. It can also be found in subtle, everyday accommodations that help our team members feel valued and supported. From meditation rooms and quiet spaces to flexible schedules, these small but significant efforts contribute to a culture where everyone can thrive.
How Small Accommodations Make a Big Impact
Inclusion at UWM starts with recognizing and addressing the diverse needs of our workforce. Our campus amenities and accommodations play a crucial role in this effort. For example, meditation rooms provide space for team members to take a moment for mindfulness and reflection. Lactation rooms offer a private and comfortable environment for new mothers.
These simple accommodations have a significant impact on the well-being and productivity of our team members — and when team members feel their personal needs are met and respected, they are more likely to be engaged, motivated, and invested in the company. Moreover, these accommodations support a diverse workforce by recognizing and valuing different cultures and personal needs. At UWM, we understand that fostering an inclusive environment is essential for creating a culture where everyone can succeed.
Quiet Spaces for Focus and Productivity
In addition to accommodating the unique needs of our diverse workforce, UWM also believes in providing spaces where every team member can work, make a phone call, or have a meeting in private. These spaces come in a variety of forms throughout our campus, from privacy coves to casual nooks and even a restored vintage phone booth.
In UWM’s modern, open work environment designed to increase collaboration, these small spaces give our team members a place where they can focus, discuss sensitive or confidential topics, brainstorm and more. They also offer a peaceful retreat where team members can relax, de-stress, or simply take a moment to themselves.
The Flexibility to Succeed
Another UWM initiative is Flex 60, which gives team members the flexibility to start work within 60 minutes before or after their scheduled shift. By acknowledging that life happens — even during work hours — we empower our team members to take control of their schedules and find a balance that works for them. Whether for parents with school-aged children, individuals pursuing further education, or those with unique commitments, Flex 60 is just another simple way UWM supports our team’s unique needs and lifestyles.
At UWM, we strongly believe inclusion practices are essential to creating a supportive and empowering work environment, and we are committed to providing the resources our team members need to feel and perform their best.
