From an unranked mortgage lender 10 years ago to the #1 overall lender in America, learn how we made our way to the top.

In 2023, UWM became the #1 overall mortgage lender in America. It’s been an incredible journey from operating out of the back of a grocery store with just 12 team members to our current 200-acre campus with over 6,000 team members. And as our family has grown, so have our accolades. We’ve been inducted into the Training Hall of Fame, named the #1 Wholesale Lender in the country for 8 consecutive years, become a publicly traded company on the NYSE and much more. 

Our secret? At UWM, we invest in our people. We are relationship driven, not transaction driven – when it comes to our team members as well as our clients. Here’s how our people have made it possible for us to rise to #1: 

We Care For One Another

Supporting our team members every day and making them feel cared for helps us deliver the speed and ease that brokers need to give their borrowers an unparalleled experience. Our goal is to grow the broker channel — and it all starts with happy, motivated teams in our buildings.

At UWM, there’s some kind of celebration happening daily, from team members’ birthdays and work anniversaries to major holidays and even cultural events you may never have heard of before. We’ve cultivated a friendly spirit that makes everyone feel welcome, and encouraged people to “Be You Here” — meaning you don’t have to leave your interests (and interesting personality) at home in order to fit in.

Once you’re here, you’ll find an environment that’s open by design. Although UWM consists of various teams with different specialties, everyone works together as one team, pitching in and lending their specific talents while learning new ones. There are always training sessions and “job shadows” going on, meaning you’ll definitely grow and acquire new skills that will make you an even more invaluable team member.

We’re Innovators

Sometimes the best way to offer support is by taking the lead. At UWM, we provide our internal teams with an environment where they can innovate groundbreaking technology for our brokers. Our Technology team works closely with business units across the company to better understand our business processes, then uses the feedback from our users and clients to build industry-disrupting tools from scratch. This process allows us to create tools that meet their evolving needs, resulting in game-changers like UWM’s InTouch mobile app and Brand 360 – a white label marketing tool that we provide to our brokers for free - that have revolutionized the mortgage business.

Another reason we develop our own technology? Because we believe in a build vs. buy philosophy, making us true leaders in not just the mortgage industry but in the fintech space as well. This involves predicting the needs of our mortgage broker partners and developing technology that helps them compete on a much higher level. Key examples include our Point of Sale (POS), Loan Origination System (LOS) and Customer Relationship Manager (CRM) solutions.

“Continuous Improvement” is one of our core company pillars, and another sign of how deeply we invest in all of our team members. We measure our success not just in company advancement, but team member growth.

To reflect this commitment, we offer almost non-stop leadership training and Development X programs that allow our people to build skills in new areas of the business where they have no previous experience.

Not only do team members have access to a Hall-of-Fame training team here, they also benefit from an incredible culture of collaboration and mentorship, including direct access to their leaders who encourage them to dominate every day, which results in exceptional service for our broker partners.

We Put The Team First

We take care of our people because if they’re happy, our clients are happy. That’s why a big part of our culture is based on relationships, putting others first and encouraging everyone to be themselves. From our team member resource groups such as United Black and United Pride to our family-oriented company events like Boonited and the UWM Fair, our purpose is to show appreciation to our team members and support them in every way. 

Our business is even designed to protect our team members from changes in the market. Regardless of interest rates, our business is structured to still thrive during market downturns. We know that every team member at UWM is crucial to the success of our business — which is why we don’t do layoffs.

While other lenders have no choice but to lay off team members, we continue to invest in our teams and have never laid off a team member in our 37-year history. It sends a great message to our broker partners as they push forward, work hard and ultimately win regardless of the market.

Our People Make It Possible

At UWM, we’ve built a strong foundation and culture that have allowed us to go from an unranked lender 10 years ago to the #1 overall lender in America with 38% of the wholesale market share in 2022, and 8% of the overall mortgage market. Without the hard work, dedication and passion of our teams and our mortgage broker partners, this wouldn’t be possible. And we plan to continue dominating and winning for years to come.
